Brink Design completed a ranch WiFi installation at Vig Ranch in South Dakota, deploying a UniFi wireless network designed to deliver reliable connectivity across barns, yards, and large outdoor areas. Rural properties often struggle with internet coverage due to the distance between buildings, terrain challenges, and the lack of existing network infrastructure.

With the right wireless networking equipment and system design, however, it is possible to create a stable high-speed WiFi network across an entire ranch property. This project demonstrates how point-to-point wireless bridges and outdoor access points can be combined to deliver reliable connectivity across hundreds of feet without trenching cables.

Technologies Used

UniFi Outdoor Access Points

Brink Design deployed UniFi Swiss Army Knife outdoor access points to provide strong and reliable wireless coverage across key areas of the ranch. These devices are designed for outdoor installations and are capable of delivering consistent WiFi coverage even in demanding rural environments.

Point-to-Point Wireless Bridges

To connect buildings across long distances, point-to-point (PTP) WiFi bridges were installed. These wireless bridges transmit network connectivity between structures without the need to trench fiber or Ethernet cables across the property.

This approach significantly reduces installation costs while maintaining reliable network performance.

Network Design and Implementation

Main House to Shop Connection

The primary network connection begins at the main house, where internet service originates.

A point-to-point WiFi bridge was installed to transmit network connectivity 642 feet from the main house to a tower located near the ranch shop. This tower had previously been used for satellite television, making it an ideal mounting location for the wireless bridge equipment.

From the tower, the wireless bridge connects to a network enclosure at the shop. Inside the shop, the connection feeds into a UniFi access point, providing strong indoor WiFi coverage for the shop building.

This setup ensures that equipment, devices, and smart systems inside the shop can access the internet reliably.

Shop to Horse Shed Network Extension

To extend the ranch WiFi network even further, an outdoor Ethernet cable was run 60 feet from the shop to another point-to-point wireless bridge device.

This second wireless bridge transmits network connectivity 250 feet to the Horse Shed, allowing the ranch to extend its WiFi infrastructure without trenching long cable runs.

At the Horse Shed, a UniFi outdoor access point was mounted on a pole to provide WiFi coverage across the surrounding outdoor area. This coverage supports ranch operations such as branding events, equipment monitoring, and mobile device connectivity.

Inside the Horse Shed, a network switch connects to an additional UniFi access point via Ethernet, providing strong wireless coverage throughout the interior of the structure.
